Maurits van Tol is Chief Executive of the Catalyst Technologies Division and member of the Executive Committee at Johnson Matthey Plc, a global leader in sustainable technologies. We apply our cutting-edge science to create solutions with our customers that make a real difference to the world around us. We’ve been leaders in our field for more than 200 years, applying unrivalled scientific expertise to enable cleaner air, the more efficient use and recycling of our planet's natural resources, and a transition to a net-zero society, in the energy as well as the chemical and synthetic fuel markets. Maurits joined Johnson Matthey in 2019 in the role of Chief Technology Officer and member of the Executive Committee accountable for innovation delivery and research and technology development globally. Before moving to the UK to join Johnson Matthey, Maurits was the Senior Vice President Innovation and Technology at Borealis AG, based in Austria, since 2012. Maurits was also responsible for shaping the Circular Economy business for Borealis and was a member of the company’s managing board responsible for the Plastics business. Prior to joining Borealis AG, he spent 19 years with Royal DSM NV in The Netherlands in a wide variety of R&D, Innovation and Business Management roles. Maurits has a PhD in Catalysis and an MSc in Physical Chemistry and Catalysis, both from Leiden University, The Netherlands. Parts of his studies were also performed at the University of East Anglia (UK), and UC Berkeley (US). He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Faraday Institution in the UK and an expert advisor to the UN Industrial Development Organization and Tsinghua University joint undertaking IHEC (International Hydrogen Energy Centre). He also serves on the C2V Carbon to Value Carbontech Leadership Council (CLC), an invitation only group of corporate, non-profit, and government thought leaders who foster commercialization opportunities and identify avenues for technology validation, testing, and demonstration in for example carbon capture and use. He joined the Royal Society Science, Industry and Translation committee in 2023. Maurits has a passion for sustainability and cleantech and has 18 patents to his name, and over 30 publications. His research has won awards from Leiden University and the Royal Dutch Chemical Society.

Scalability: the technology path to energy transition

Many of the climate technologies needed to deliver decarbonisation targets already exist, but the path to scalability faces bottlenecks on multiple fronts including critical minerals supply, manufacturing capacity, skills and infrastructure. In addition to incentivising policy measures, like those included in the European Green Deal and the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, energy companies have opportunities to accelerate scalability and the commercial viability across renewables, nuclear, and storage to meet energy transition targets.

In this Action Session, we will examine the scalability of technologies needed to drive the energy transition. We will hear from industry experts on what the best innovative solutions are and what investment and capital is needed to scale them.
